NOLS River Rescue Guide Wins National Book Award

NOLSRiverRescue.jpgLANDER, WY—The National Outdoor Book Awards (NOBA) announced its 2015 recipients last week, which included the NOLS River Rescue Guide.

The National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) publication is a guide of safety, rescue and recovery techniques for all who work and play on the water.

“Colorfully illustrated throughout, the Guide is a compendium of well-tested procedures and techniques that have been found to be practical and useful in their river program,” said Ron Watters, NOBA chairman. “It is a welcome addition to river safety literature.”

Nate Ostis, a senior instructor for the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS), authored the book.

“Ostis approaches river rescue training not as a chore, but as a quest. In his own teaching and river running, he role-models flexibility and a constant reassessment of his own skills,” said former NOLS Curriculum Publications Manager Ben Lester. “The NOLS River Rescue Guide reflects this ‘lifelong learner’ mindset and manages to capture his own joy at spending time in whitewater. It was a pleasure to edit, and even more of a pleasure to read as a finished product.”

NOBA is the outdoor world’s largest and most prestigious book award program, and it has recognized NOLS Wilderness Guide with the same award in the past.
